Elemental Ritual for Ecological Grief

  • Center for Rural Livelihoods 80574 Hazelton Road Cottage Grove United States (map)

To tend to our grief, we come together on the earth, inviting the elements to ground us, receive us, and transform us. The minerals, waters and fire have a special ability to hold us and heal us in the courageous practice of showing up just as we are.

an elemental ritual for ecological grief

Sunday, November 29th | from 10-5pm

at the Center for Rural Livelihoods, Cottage Grove

We will weave in and out of group sharing and quiet time on the land. Into clay, we will give shape to our broken hearts, our love for life, our sorrow for the world. Giving form to the preciousness of what we grieve. These sculptures will be offerings, meant to be broken by the powerful force of the fire. Witnessing the breaking invokes the loss or change of what was or could have been. Together we will tend an altar of grief and move into a space for rage, wails, witness, drumming, movement and tenderness, all in organic succession.

There is so much to grieve in these times and we cannot not and should not be alone in it. It is our intention to create a space that welcomes whatever arises, trusting our rage, witnessing our numbness, honoring our pace. Being together in our grieving breathes more resilience into our individual lives and into our community; we need each other to be strong.

Hosanna White

Hosanna is dedicated to practicing slow hand crafts and ancestral skills that connect her with the source of her materials and the traditional folk ways of her Scottish and English ancestors. The time tending and preparing clay, the willow fields, or her goat herd, all restitch her life with a deep sense of relationship and magic.

Hosanna resides in the foothills of Western Oregon, a geologically rich landscape that has inspired her studio work, Whitesnake Arts. She blends bio-regional history and land stewardship into her artwork and place based pottery.

Dani Stormes

Dani has facilitated ceremonies and supported women through birth and pregnancy loss for over a decade. Her work as a grief tender is informed by her own journey with death, pregnancy loss and time in ceremony with elders such as Laurence Cole, who carries the Dagara-inspired ritual that breathes life into this offering. While Dani has gathered wisdom from numerous teachers, a knowing of grief finds home in her bones beyond this lifetime. She is alive in her purpose traversing life's thresholds; the wild places where our capacities to be with all of life expand and the vast spectrums of joy and pain can be felt.
