Paintmaking Tool Kit & Rainbow Earth Pigments

from $55.00

((earth pigments, hand made watercolor, paintmaking))

This is a simple paintmaking tool kit for anyone eager to get started making their own paint, and potentially continue on after that to forage their own local pigments.

Included in this set is a watercolor making guidebook, palette knife, simple mulling weight, a 6 pan clay palette, ¾ c pack of gum arabic with recipe, and a sample pack of 6 rainbow earth pigments. You can increase the amount of pigment with this set to the large pack at checkout!

The paint maker will need to invest in their own ceramic or glass mulling tile, easily found at building supply stores like Home Depot.

The pigments in this set were carefully collected from public roadways, where the embankment’s impact is eroding these soils and stones. All pigments were collected in OREGON. They are refined into fine powder by separating the lightest particles after grinding, sifting and levigating.

Gum Arabic is a traditional water soluble binder used for watercolor. This gum comes from the acacia tree and can be sourced from any stone fruit trees. Earth pigments can also be mixed with oil, hide glue, wheat paste, egg yolk, acrylic medium, beeswax, and more! They are very adaptable.

>>> The Pigments <<<
Iron ochre has an ancient history that people throughout time and the world have used to express themselves and their connection to the mineral body of the earth. Five of these colors are made by the geologic synergy of iron and oxygen, an elemental bond we share in our blood. Iron or ochre expresses different colors and qualities based on exposure to oxygen, pressure, heat, and substrate. Reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, purples, browns, and some greens are created through iron’s touch.

In the pack:

1) rich RED iron oxide from eastern Oregon (Umatilla territory)

2) ORANGE ochre foraged in the Southern Willamette Valley hillslopes (Kalapuya territory)

3) YELLOW limonite from the coastal mountains of Western Oregon (Siuslaw territory)

4) GREEN celadonite from the Cascade Mountains (Santiam territory)

5) maya BLUE indigo clay infusion grown in Eugene with clay gathered in Eastern Oregon (Umatilla territory)

6) PURPLE/BROWN hematite from the Cascade foothills (Kalapuya & Mollala territory)

>>>Considerations <<<

*Ethical. Many bulk earth pigment suppliers extract earth from mines which meet commercial demands affordably, but nonetheless have a high cost for the land. Supporting small scale paint makers helps divest from oil and harmful extractions that so often are overlooked at the art store. Thank you!

**Sacred Ground. All land is sacred, even parking lots and road sides. This land, so called America was taken from native nations, treaties were not honored, and has since not been well stewarded. Given this and knowing what we know now, may we do what we can for this Earth, learn about and ally against systemic racism towards native communities, and give power to their leadership. A few teachers and inspirations of mine include: Lyla June, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Rowan White, Kim Tallbear, and Pat McCabe. Check them out!

*** In gratitude for the wisdom and service of the First Nations whose homelands these pigments come from, 5% percentage of all paint and pigment sales goes toward supporting their leadership and land stewardship.
